Biography of Dua Lipa

Early life

Dua Lipa was born on August 22, 1995, in the district of Westminster City of London, being the daughter eldest daughter of a marriage refugee Kosovo - Kosovars, Dukagjin Lipa and Anesa Rexha of Pristina, who moved the city of London and settled in the British capital in 1992,  by the time they occurred events in Sarajevo during the Bosnian war, a territory which constituted the former Yugoslavia, from whom his maternal grandmother was original, which was one of the causes that led to his emigration, in addition to the interest of his parents to complete his studies. Upon his arrival in England , Dukagjin found employment with a production company for music festivals, such as Glastonbury and Reading , which allowed him to study marketing at the Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM).  For her part, Anesa specialized in tourism and from her marriage to Dukagjin, they had two more children: Rina, in May 2001, and Gjin, in December 2005, Who grew up alongside her older sister in North West London.
He inherited the musical taste of his father,  who was the vocalist and guitarist of the Kosovar rock band Oda, which disintegrated in 1998, after the publication of his last album, 1998 although, twelve years later he met again for a short time with a version of the song "Era", original by the band Gjurmët.  Dukagjin always maintained his interest in music and used to play at home works of his own and popular songs by artists such as David BowieBob DylanRadioheadStingThe Police and StereophonicsAt that family atmosphere Lipa grew up, and his musical talent manifested itself very early. He discovered new sources of inspiration when he obtained his first record material, the album Whoa, Nelly! by Nelly Furtado and in turn, showed interest in Pink's M! sandal wood .
His primary studies included music lessons and the instrument in which he learned his first musical notions was the cello , although he stopped playing, as it was difficult for him to move it home due to his short stature.  When he auditioned to enter the school choir, his voice was too low to reach the high notes and the facilitator did not allow his admission, arguing that his vocal abilities were not sufficiently developed. Began receiving singing lessons on weekends at the School Sylvia Young Theater in London.  I was eleven at the time it finished elementary school, he moved with his family to Pristina, capital of Kosovoonce achieved independence.

Transfer to Kosovo

His move to Kosovo was motivated by the work destination of his father, Dukagjin,  a marketing entrepreneur , who shortly after settling in Pristina, specifically in the Sunny Hill neighborhood where he had grown up, founded a communications agency for marketing .
Lipa assimilated the moving process with optimism and upon arrival in Kosovo, she was fascinated with the sense of "security" and "community" she perceived from the capital. The adaptation process that she developed was also magnificent and she soon managed to feel comfortable and happy in her new residence, as she had the support of several acquaintances of her parents who frequently came to visit them in London together with their children, with whom she asked to go to the same school.
Lipa did not have much difficulty in the local language either, since she had spoken Albanian at home with her parents since she was a child, although she could not write or read fluently.
By the time he arrived in Kosovo Lipa, he coincided with the advent of famous artists rap in North America who visited the region for musical performances and suffered a profound influence on this style of music.  In addition, his father was involved in the production of several of these concerts through his work for a telecommunications agency, so he had the opportunity to attend multiple presentations rappers like Method Man & Redman , Snoop Dog and 50 Cent ,Of whom he was particularly enthusiastic at the time and described his performance as the most memorable he ever attended.

His stay in Kosovo was instrumental in his awareness of his personality as a singer and he soon realized that he did not have many opportunities to launch a career there and that the only way to achieve world fame as if he returned to London.  Their wish to return to London was made possible by the daughter of some acquaintances of their parents, who was going to the British capital to do her postgraduate studies, which made them feel more confident to let her go without her company.

Return to London

Upon his return to London, he stayed in the Kilburn neighborhood , where he lived for some time before moving to the Camden borough , and began his secondary school studies at Parliament Hill College and in turn re-entered Sylvia's Drama School. Young part-time. Lipa also combined his musical vocation with various professional occupations, worked as a waitress at the Mexican restaurant La Bodega Negra in Soho , as a hostess in a nightclub in Mayfair and as a model for the virtual catalog of ASOS Marketplace, Until the agency insisted that she had to lose weight to do catwalk shows, something she refused to do.

In this unfortunate period of his life, he would later inspire in his 2016 single " Blow Your Mind (Mwah) ." In their eagerness to get a talent agent and achieve fame at the age of fourteen he began publishing on YouTube his interpretations of songs like " If I Is not Got You " by Alicia Keys and " Beautiful " by Christina Aguilera And in 2012, when he was seventeen years old, he wrote his first song "Lions, Tigers & Bears", inspired by The Wizard of Oz, which he posted on his SoundCloud page

His videos did not catch on,  but after some time he attracted the attention of Ben Mawson, a manager at Warner Bros., who put her in contact with several producers, including Emile Haynie, Andrew Wyatt, and Stephen Kozmeniuk, with whom she learned the fundamentals of the songwriting trade At first, she was more interested in "discovering" her sound than in landing a record deal; I wanted to have a sound like a cross between rapper J. Cole and pop singer Nelly Furtado, but the reaction of the producers was not exactly positive.

The first song he wrote and helped make sense of this "formula" was " Hotter than Hell ", whose letter is "inspired by a toxic relationship that made her feel useless." The production at the time consisted solely of the sound of the piano and the kick drum, and he loved the "darkness" of its melody, combined with "pop choruses" and a "natural rap sound in the stanzas."  It was thanks to this song that got his recording contract with Warner Bros, who signed in the summer of 2015,  and it's first single, " New Love " was released in late August that same year and received rave reviews,  including Lindsey Weber's review for The Faderin which he maintained that it is "surprisingly heavy, with a throbbing heartbeat that underlines his voice, which is hoarse and mature, like that of Joss Stone or Lady Gaga ."  However, to achieve public recognition was necessary to wait for the release of their next single, " Be the One " in October 2015.

For a female artist, it takes a lot more to be taken seriously if you're not sat down at a piano or with a guitar, do you know? For a male artist, people instantly assume they write their own music, but for women, they assume it's all manufactured.

According to a study carried out by Plan International UK, two-thirds of young women in their native country had suffered some type of sexual harassment in public,  however, the artist stated:
I'm lucky in that I haven't really had any sexual harassment in any way. But I think [#MeToo] is so important. You know, even from school, growing up with kiss chase or whatever, it's been ingrained in our heads that boys will be boys and its harmless fun and no big deal and to brush things off. Like catcalling. To some it might not seem a lot, but it affects your mood, people get embarrassed about the way they dress. For lots of females, be it actresses, singers, models, no matter what it is, it's not being able to have the right to dress and wear how and what you want and be taken seriously.

In December 2018, the singer-songwriter discussed her concept of feminism in an interview with Vogue, explaining that, contrary to some beliefs, feminism is not about women classifying men as inferior, but about urging society to ensure they are treated equally and affirming:
Feminism to me is not man-hating, it's just being like we deserve the same opportunities. You hear so much about all these strong important men who have changed the world, even in history and the story of mankind, somehow the fucking story starts with: "Well, the man did this".

She participated in a short film for an initiative called "Global Feminism" run by Annie Lennox's non-governmental organization The Circle in association with Apple Music released on March 7, 2019, due to International Women's Day which was celebrated the day after.  The clip highlights “the injustices still suffered by millions of women and girls around the world due to misogynyrape and violence pay for the disparity »in which Lipa appears with a poster that states: 1 and 3 women and girls are impacted by physical or sexual violence in their lifetime (1 in 3 women and girls are affected by physical or sexual violence in his life).

In October 2018, she spoke at length about why supporting the LGBT community is important to her:
I believe in equality and everyone having the same opportunities and there being a lot more acceptance in the world. You know, being from London, sometimes you live in your little bubble where there's so much diversity and so much acceptance and you don't really realize that it's not like that in every other part in the world, so you feel like because you ' re given this platform, you have a duty to really speak up and speak out about the things that are important.

Dua Lipa: Controversies

At the end of January 2020, he was criticized for attending an organized party by American singer Lizzo in a club of striptease in Los Angeles to celebrate the culmination of the sixty - second ceremony of the Grammy Awards along with Lil Nas X and RosaliaThe controversy originated from a video published by Lizzo on her Instagram stories, where Lipa and Rosalía are seen throwing money at the body of some strippers in view of the other attendees. Such actions were criticized by users on social networks calling the British singer a "bad feminist" Because such acts" instrumentalized "the woman's body. Video, then circulated in Twitter, provoked the reaction of some people who accused the singer and the other attendees of being "anti-feminist" and of contributing to a work that "literally allows them to take women as an object." "Seeing Rosalía, Dua Lipa and Lil Nas X in a strip club throwing money at strippers made me feel bad ... Weren't they feminists?" One user wrote on Twitter. A number of fans came out in defense of the artist, adding comments such as: “hope women can't go to strip clubs now? They don't even know how toxic this cancellation culture is getting. You all had the courage to cancel Dua Lipa for going to a strip club while there are men in the same industry who do this on a daily basis, ”wrote one user. Although the soloist did not comment at the time, in April of the same year she spoke about it in an interview for The Guardian, responding:
I don't like to apologize if I don't believe I should be apologizing for something. I believe in supporting women in all fields of work. Nothing at that party was derogatory; everyone was just dancing and having fun. Not every sex worker is being forced to do something they don't want to do. I think a lot of the women found it really empowering and really like to dance.

Controversies

In late January 2018 the president of the Recording AcademyNeil Portnow, made a controversial comment to the magazine Variety on the sixtieth ceremony of Grammy Awards during which only a woman, Cara Alessia, received only a prize and why The executive opined that women should "take a step forward" if they wanted to be recognized at the awards, stating:
Women who have the creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers, and want to be part of the industry on the executive level… They need to step up because I think they would be welcome .
Women who have creativity in their hearts and souls, who want to be musicians, who want to be engineers, producers and who want to be part of the industry at the executive level ... They need to step forward because I think they would be welcome that way.

The following year, Lipa won the Best New Artist award at the 61st Grammy Awards, and in her acceptance speech for the award, she referred to Portnow's comment that was labeled "sexist," stating:
I just wanted to say how honored I am to be nominated alongside so many incredible female artists this year, because I guess this year we really stepped up!

I just wanted to say how honored I am to be nominated alongside so many amazing female artists this year, because I guess this year we really took a step forward!

Months after the award, the Recording Academy announced Deborah Dugan as president and CEO of the organization, the first woman in history to hold that position, after Portnow did not obtain a renewal contract long after her controversial comments.
