Phil mickelson

Philip Alfred Mickelson , aka Phil Mickelson , born onin San Diego , is an American golfer left-handed ).

Considered one of the best players of his generation, he had to wait many years before winning his first grand slam tournament , the Masters in 2004. In total, he has six grand slam victories, with the PGA Championship.

In 2005 and 2021 and two other editions of the Masters, in 2006 and 2010. He won the British Open at Muirfield in 2013 thanks to 4 birdies on the last 6 holes on Sunday. He also finished second in twelve other majors, in 1999, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2013 at the US Open , in 2015 at the Masters ,

In 2011 and 2016 at the British Open and in 2001 and 2014 at the British Open. the PGAHe has forty-five victories on the PGA Tour (8th overall in golf history). It reached repeatedly rank no.  2 world ranking OWGR ( Official World Golf Ranking ).

He has also played in the Ryder Cup twelve times with the American team, competing in all editions from 1995 to 2018, earning three victories, in 1999, 2008 and 2016.

Biography

The beginnings

Educated at Arizona State University , he enjoyed a successful amateur career, winning three NCAA championship titles , the only other player to achieve such a feat being Ben Crenshaw . He was also the second golfer, after Jack Nicklaus , to win the NCAA title and the American Amateur Championship in the same year. Since then, only Tiger Woods has managed to achieve this double. Nicknamed "Lefty", he is the first left-hander to win this tournament. However, he is not a true left-hander: this is due to his apprenticeship with his father, during which he practiced his exercises in front of him.

In 1991 , he won his first title on the PGA tour although he was still an amateur, winning the Northern Telecom Open , to the detriment of Tom Purtzer.

Professional career

Turning professional in 1992, he joined the PGA circuit that same year.

He had to wait until 1993 for his first victory as a professional, at the Buick Invitational of California . After a second victory, he made his first Top 10 appearance in a major, finishing in sixth place in the USPGA , the winner being Paul Azinger .

In 1994 he finished in third place in the USPGA, seven strokes behind Nick Price .

In 1996, he finished once again on the podium of a grand slam tournament with a third place on the Augusta course for the Masters . He is beaten by Nick Faldo , who wins his third green jacket, and by Greg NormanDuring this season, he won four victories on the American circuit.

After a year 1997 punctuated by two victories, but without a presence in the Top 10 of a Major, he won two more victories in 1998 and finished in tenth place at the US Open.

In 1999, Payne Stewart deprived him of his first victory by winning the US Open at onceDuring this season, for the first time since 1993, Mickelson failed to secure a victory on the PGA Tour.

After four more victories in 2000, he returned to a major podium with a third place in the 2001 Masters, won by Tiger Woods in 16 strokes under par , ahead of David Duval by two strokes and Mickelson by three.

That same 2001 season, he finished second in the USPGA, behind American David Toms who won with a point lead .

The 2002 season began with a third place at the Masters. Tiger Woods won the title in twelve strokes under par, with Retief Goosen taking second place with three strokes, one point ahead of MickelsonHe then went on to a third consecutive major finished among the first three: he finished in second place in the US Open, beaten once again by Tiger Woods.

2003 saw Mickelson finish third in the Masters for the third consecutive year, behind Mike Weir and L Mattiace.

During these years, he was then considered the best player in the world not to have won a major. He freed himself from this unofficial title by winning his first Grand Slam victory at the 2004 Masters. During this one, he started the last round tied with Chris DiMarco , also beating Ernie Els by three strokes. Mickelson must ensure a birdie on the last hole to avoid going into the playoff with the latter. This is only the fourth time in the history of the tournament that a birdie on the last hole is decisive 9 . He becomes the third left-hander to win a major tournament, after New Zealand's Sir Bob Charles in the British Open 1963 and the Canadian Mike Weir at the 2003 Masters .

He then finished second in the US Open at Shinnecock Hills , finishing two strokes behind Retief GoosenThen he finished in third place in the British Open, behind Todd Hamilton and Ernie ElsAt the PGA Championship, the last Grand Slam round of the year, he finished with a new place in the Top 10, in sixth position behind the winner Vijay Singh.

He started the 2005 season with two consecutive victories, the FBR Open and the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am . His season in Major begins with a tenth place at the Masters, its worst performance since 1999. His results at the US Open, 33th , and then the British Open, 60 are less good. During the USPGA, a tournament he has been leading since the first round, he ends up with a birdie on the last hole which gives him the victory against Steve Elkington and Thomas Bjørn.

The following year, he began with another victory at the Masters. The victory of two successive majors had not been achieved since 2002 by Tiger Woods. He finished with a score of three strokes under the par total, ahead of Tim Clark by two strokes He then went on to second place in the US Open, beaten by Geoff OgilvyWhile he has a stroke of lead at the tee of the last hole, he takes risks to reach the green and hits a tree. This leads him to a double bugy which gives the victory to Ogilvy. He then admits to behaving "like an idiot".

In 2007, for the first time since the British Open in 1999, it fails to cross the "  cut  " at the US Open. On the next major, he fails again after the first two laps. it is also the first time since 1997 that he has failed to finish in the Top 10 of one of the majors.

The following year, he returned to the Top 10 twice, at the Masters with fifth place, then at the USPGA with seventh place.

In 2009, after a first victory at the Northern Trust Open, he won his first victory in one of the three tournaments of the World Golf Championships . He triumphs in Doral Florida his compatriot Nick Watney at the WGC-Cadillac Championship , having first been admitted to emergency in the evening of the third round, the victim of sunstroke.

The , Phil Mickelson won his fourth major title, winning for the third time in his career the green jacket awarded to the winner of the Augusta Masters.

In 2013, a few weeks after having once again narrowly missed a first title at the US Open , where he finished a sixth time second with two strokes from Justin Rose , he continued with two successes in Scotland. He first won the Scottish Open and then his fifth major the following week on the Muirfield course Five strokes behind leader Lee Westwood at the start of day four, Phil Mickelson made an impressive comeback to win for the first time at the British Open, the, the only player under par, three strokes ahead of Henrik Stenson . It becomes world No. 2 again on this occasion.

It was no longer successful in the 2014, 2015, 2016 and 2017 seasons. For many observers, its time has passed. Despite everything, he still finished second in three majors during this period. At the 2014 PGA Championship to start where he only gave in suddenly, 15 under par, to Rory McIlroy in the dark on the course of Valhalla in Kentucky. In 2015, he finished second in the Masters four strokes away from an untouchable Jordan Spieth .

Finally in 2016, he achieved an almost perfect British Open. In the lead in the first lap thanks to a score of 63, he will only give up after a fantastic mano to mano with Henrik Stenson on Sunday. He finally finished 3 strokes behind the Swedish despite a card of 65. The third, JB Holmes, finished 11 strokes behind Phil Mickelson. This pretty much reflects the dominance of the two men over the rest of the field.

In 2018, he returned to victory at the World Golf Championship in Mexico by beating Justin Thomas in the playoff. He won the AT&T Pebble Beach pro-am for the fifth time in 2019, before falling inexorably in the hierarchy at the end of the season and in 2020 where he struggles to remain competitive compared to the young players on the circuit. At the end of the 2020 season, he begins with two successes in as many tournaments on the Champions Tour of the PGA circuit, suggesting that he is preparing to gradually switch to the senior circuit.

His start to the season in 2021 on the main circuit is also quite disappointing, his best result being a 21st place in the Masters . Despite a few flashes here and there, he struggles to line up four solid laps in a row. The 2021 PGA Championship held at the Ocean Course in Kiawah Island, South Carolina, will stop the clock of decline and even turn it back a few years.

Placed in the first lap, he took the lead on the second day with a score of 69. He remained in the lead on the third day after moving day and resisted the return of Brooks Koepka . He shared the last game with the latter on Sunday and finally won with two strokes ahead of his partner of the day and Louis Oosthuizen. It is the sixth title in major for the American, who at the same time becomes the oldest winner of a golf Grand Slam tournament.

Ryder Cup

A continuous member of the American Ryder Cup team , however, he does not present a record at the level one would expect for a player who has held second place on numerous occasions in the Official World Golf Ranking .

US captain of the Ryder Cup 2004 , Hal Sutton even combines the two best players in the world, Mickelson and Tiger Woods. But the result is not what expected: for their first meeting, they lost to the European pair composed of Colin Montgomerie and Pádraig Harrington on the score of 2 and 1 (two strokes ahead and one hole to play) in " 4 balls best ball ”, then against Darren Clarke and Lee Westwood on the score of 1 up in the“ foursome ”of the afternoon.

After the 2008 edition , which saw the United States return to victory after three editions won by Europe, it has a record of 10 wins, 14 losses and 6 games divided in 30 games. This record deteriorated further after the 2010 Ryder Cup : he played four games, for a record of one victory - in the singles against Peter Hanson - but three defeats in the doubles matches.

During these, he is first associated with Dustin Johnson - defeat three and two against Lee Westwood and Martin Kaymer then by the same score against Pádraig Harrington and Ross FisherIn his last doubles game, he teamed up with Rickie Fowler for a two-and-one loss to Ian Poulter and Martin Kaymer. Europe takes its revenge by winning by 14 ½ to 13 ½.

For the 39th 2012 Ryder Cup held on the course of Medinah Country Club in Chicago in the 'Foursome' Friday morning, Phil Mickelson is associated with Keegan Bradley facing the pair Luke Donald / Sergio García , where American win 4 & 3. For the Friday afternoon Fourball , the same American pair wins 2 & 1 against European pair Rory McIlroy / Graeme McDowell .

Always associated with Keegan Bradley for the 'Foursome' on Saturday morning, the two friends largely beat 7 & 6 on the duo Lee Westwood / Luke DonaldPhil is left to rest for Saturday afternoon. Before the duels, he therefore brings three points to the US team. In the Sunday singles, captain Davis Love III schedules 'Lefty' in the fourth meeting against English Justin Rose , but the 1up loss will be there and will give a new point for Europe. His 2012 total will therefore be: 4 matches, 3 wins, 1 loss.

Anecdote

Mickelson is a false left-hander. He's actually right-handed in everything except golf. It would come to him from the habit which he acquired very young by placing himself in front of his father, a right-hander, to learn to play.

Mickelson is nicknamed by some of his peers MIGJAM, short for "Man I'm God, Just Ask Me". This would come from the fact that he loves to be interested in things, especially complicated things like quantum physics . He passes for a friendly "I know everything" gentleman.

His mother, Mary, won the Senior Olympics reserved for more than 50 years in 2002 in the trial of Basketball three against three.
