Biography
Youth and training
Maria Halle Berry was born onin Cleveland, Ohio. The first name Halle is chosen by his parents of the Halle Building which was located in Cleveland. When she was five years old, her mother had her marital status changed by reversing the order of her two first names.
His father, Jerome Jesse Berry, is an African-American, working as a guard in the psychiatric ward of a hospital 6, before becoming, later, a bus driver. His mother, Judith Ann Hawkins, is a white nurse of English and German origin operating in the service where his father works.
Halle Berry's maternal grandmother, Nellie Dicken, was born in Sawley, Derbyshire, United Kingdom, while her maternal grandfather, Earl Ellsworth Hawkins, was born in Ohio.
While only 4 years old, Halle and her older sister, Heidi Berry-Henderson, were raised exclusively by their mother after their parents separated. The actress later claims that her mother was beaten by her father every day, thrown down the stairs, and hit on the head with a bottle of wine. She specifies: “I haven't heard from him since he left the family home. Maybe he's no longer alive. »
Halle Berry experiences racism in the schoolyards 8, 9. She graduated from Bedford High School in Cleveland, where she served as a cheerleader, honor student, editor of the school newspaper, and prom queen. Afterward, she went to college at Cuyahoga Community College.
In the 1980s, she participated in several beauty pageants, winning Miss Teen All American in 1985 and Miss Ohio USA in 1986. In 1986, she became 1st runner-up to Miss USA and 4th runner-up to Miss World. She does not win the competitions but she stands out for her charisma and her talent as an actress. During this contest, she states that she hopes to become an animator or have something to do with the media. This interview allows him to get the highest score from the judges. She is the first African-American to participate in miss World in 1986.
Career
Beginnings and progression
In 1989, Berry moved to New York to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. During her first stay, she lacks money and has to live in a shelter for the homeless. She later confides that she went through a difficult time as a homeless.
She began a brief modeling career, notably in Chicago, before landing the role of Emily Franklin, her first role on television, in the series The Living Dolls in 1989 12. During the recording of Living Dolls, she falls into a coma and is diagnosed with diabetes. After the cancellation of the series, she moved to Los Angeles and continued with West Coast in 1991.
The same year, Halle Berry made her film debut alongside Samuel L. Jackson in Jungle Fever. Spike Lee thus grants him his first important role, seduced by the perseverance of the actress. She plays a prostitute with a crack addiction. In 1992, she landed the role of Angela Lewis in the memorable romantic comedy Boomerang 2, worn by Eddie Murphy, which put her in the spotlight. With this new visibility, she won the Image Award from the NAACP and the Best Female Hope Award from the Hollywood Reporters' Club in the mini-series by Alex Haley Queen. Halle Berry also takes part in the family film The Flintstones by lending her appearance to "Sharon Stone", a sultry secretary who seduces Fred Flintstones.
Next, she took on a more serious role, playing a former drug addict struggling for custody of her son in 1995's Losing Isaiah, alongside Jessica Lange. Then she played Sandra Beecher in Race the Sun in 1996. This film was inspired by a true story that was shot in Australia. She shares the poster there alongside Kurt Russell, whom she finds playing an air hostess in the action film Ultimate Decision by Stuart Baird, also starring Steven Seagal. This earns him a Blockbuster Award 14. Thanks to this media exposure, she went on to a series of projects at the end of the 1990s: she played the main role in the thriller Sombres Suspicions, then she went on to the wacky comedy BAPS and the comedy-drama Bulworth alongside and under the direction of Warren Beatty. Halle Berry is also part of the all-female comedy-drama trio Why Do Fools Fall in Love, alongside Vivica A. Fox.
In addition, from 1996, she became the spokesperson for the Revlon brand for seven years, and her contract was renewed in 2004.
Consecration then headliner
The year 2000 marked a turning point, rewarding risky choices: a foray into television was crowned by critical success: she won the Golden Globe for best actress in a television film or a mini-series for her incarnation of Dorothy Dandridge in a prestigious biopic broadcast by HBO. Then on the cinema side, she is part of the cast assembled by Bryan Singer for his blockbuster X-Men, an adaptation of the eponymous comic book from Marvel editions. She lends her features to Ororo Monroe alias Tornado, alongside Famke Janssen, James Marsden, and Hugh Jackman. The film was a surprise critical and commercial success and launched the studios on the production of adaptations of comic books. Bryan Singer later explains that he was seduced by Halle Berry following her performance in the biopic devoted to Dorothy Dandridge.
The actress confirms the following year with two equally different feature films. She first plays the action thriller Opération Espadon, by Dominic Sena, where she embodies the femme Fatales within a male cast led by Hugh Jackman and John Travolta. The actress performed her first topless scene there, for which she received a bonus of 500,000 dollars on a salary already estimated at 2 million.
This sexy interpretation does not overshadow his other project of the year: the drama In the Shadow of Hate, the first Hollywood project of German-Swiss director Marc Forster. Her performance as a woman married to a death row inmate earned her wide critical acclaim, to the point of receiving the Oscar for Best Actress in 2002. After this historic victory, the NAACP then makes this statement:
“Congratulations to Halle Berry and Denzel Washington for giving us hope and making us proud. If this is a sign that Hollywood is finally ready to give opportunities and judge performance based on skill and not skin color. So that's a good thing.
Upon receiving her award, Halle Berry gave an acceptance speech honoring previous black actresses who had never had this recognition:
"This moment is beyond me, this moment I live it for Dorothy Dandridge, Lena Horne, Diahann Carroll... This moment I live it for the women who are by my side: Jada Pinkett Smith, Angela Bassett, Vivica A. Fox... And this moment, I live it for all the women of color who now have a chance. Because tonight, a door has opened. »
She won the same year the Silver Bear for Best Actress at the Berlin Film Festival and the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Actress. Her media exposure peaked that year when she was chosen to star opposite Pierce Brosnan in the 20th James Bond film, Die Another Day, directed by New Zealander Lee Tamahori. Her character of Jinx, conceived as a female alter-ego to the British secret agent, is even being considered as the heroine of a spin-off film 20, eventually canceled. After she won the Oscar, scenes were rewritten to give her more screen time.
In 2003 saw her return as Storm in X-Men 2, still directed by Bryan Singer, a critical 21 hit that surpassed its predecessor at the box office. In that same year, she was voted No. 1 of the 100 sexiest women in the world by FHM magazine. However, another film will mark the beginning of certain pitfalls. Then, in November, she plays in the psychological-fantasy thriller Gothika alongside Robert Downey Jr., directed by Frenchman Mathieu Kassovitz.
During filming, she broke her arm, and production was halted for eight weeks. The film was a box office success in the United States, however, grossing over $60 million domestically, to which was added over $80 million overseas. Although reviews were mixed, Halle's performance was praised, and she won the Black Reel Award and the Teen Choice Award for Best Actress.
She attempted to return to superhero films in 2004, this time as the sole headliner, for Catwoman, once again directed by a Frenchman, Pitof. But the review is disastrous, and the film is this time a commercial failure, nipping in the bud the hopes of a franchise based on the character. The actress is even awarded the Razzie Award for the worst actress. She comes to collect this prize and declares with humor:
“You have to be able to laugh at yourself, agree to take risks even if it means hunkering down. »
The year 2005 was marked only by his participation in the dubbing of the animated film Robots by Chris Wedge, then the year 2006 allowed him to return to the heights of the box office thanks to the last part of the first X-Men trilogy, with Brett Ratner's X-Men: The Last Stand. The blockbuster is the least well-received installment in the 24 franchise, but it's also the most lucrative. In addition, she serves as executive producer of George C. Wolfe's drama television film, Lackawanna Blues (in) with Sharon Epatha Merkerson, Carmen Ejogo, and Terrence Howard.
The TV movie was critically acclaimed and won several prestigious awards. Her work as a producer was hailed with a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Best Television Movie and the film was voted Best Picture at the Black Movie Awards and at the Christopher Awards.
In 2007, she moved away from big productions with two works attempting to reconnect with the realistic drama of her critical success, first with the thriller Dangereuse Séduction, by James Foley, then the drama Our Burnt Memories by Susanne beer.
For these two films, she shares the bill respectively with Bruce Willis and Benicio del Toro. The first did not excite the critics and barely reimbursed its budget, while the second was more convincing but was a commercial failure.
, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in front of the Kodak Theater (which became the Dolby Theater after Kodak went bankrupt in 2012) at 6801 Hollywood Boulevard, for her contributions to the motion picture industry.
She is elected by Esquire magazine "Sexiest Woman Alive" in October. She says about it:
"I don't know exactly what that means, being and having just had a baby, I think I'll just accept it and thank you".
That same year, rapper Hurricane Chris released a song called Halle Berry (She's Fine), extolling the beauty and sex appeal of the actress. Also in 2008, she was named " Sexiest Black Woman " by Access Hollywood TV One Accès. She was also named Woman of the Year by the famous magazine Elle and received the Icon Awards 2008.
Independent cinema, supporting roles, and television
She distanced herself from Hollywood cinema, before returning in 2011 to headline the Canadian historical drama, Frankie and Alice, by Geoffrey Sax. For this film, Halle Berry received the Best Actress Award from the African-American Film Critics Association, and the actress' performance was hailed, and also earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress. This is also the fourth time she has been nominated for this ceremony, which makes her the first actress of African descent to be nominated several times in this category.
That same year, she could count on Garry Marshall's new choral romantic comedy, Happy New Year to fill the rooms a little, failing to convince the critics.
Her year 2012 was marked by two radically different productions: she first shared the poster for the action thriller Dark Tide, by John Stockwell, with her husband Olivier Martinez, who did not receive a single positive review, then she took part in the ambitious sci-fi epic Cloud Atlas, co-directed by Tom Tykwer and Andy and Lana Wachowski. This ambitious feature film, co-produced internationally, allows him to play several roles, like his colleagues Tom Hanks, Hugh Grant, and Susan Sarandon. The film repays its budget with difficulty but it receives mostly rave reviews, recognizing the creative effervescence of the work .
In 2013, she returned to her first love with the thriller The Call, by Brad Anderson, with a very modest budget, the film was a resounding success at the world box office although it divided critics 33. She also takes part in one of the segments of the very poorly received sketch-comedy, My Movie Project. She was approached for the role of Audrey Hepburn in a remake of Fred Zinnemann's 1959 film At Risk of Getting Lost, but the idea was ultimately dropped.
The year 2014 finally allows him to return to leading productions. She returns to her role as Tornado in the blockbuster X-Men: Days of Future Past, for which director Bryan Singer summons the franchise's entire original cast. The film is the franchise's highest-grossing critical success to date, 35 grossing $748 million on a budget of $200 million. She builds on this success by starring in her own television series, the sci-fi drama Extant, on CBS. The series, produced by Steven Spielberg, was well received by critics and audiences, but ratings steadily faltered. She was arrested in October.
In 2016, she played a small role in the stand-up film Kevin Hart: What Now? which follows friend Kevin Hart's one-man show 37, presented to an audience of 50,000 people 38 and released in 2017.
Diversification :
2017 marks the year of her return to the big screen since she multiplies the projects:
First of all, the release of the action thriller Kidnap, by Luis Prieto (en), of which she is the heroine and the producer, was postponed that year, following the financial difficulties of the distributor 39. The film tells the journey of a woman, whose son has just been kidnapped in a shopping center, who sets off in pursuit of the kidnappers to recover him. This production marks the return of the actress to the fore in a great success and accumulates more than 25 million receipts, at the time of its presentation at the American Film Festival of Deauville 40. This role earned her a quote for the NAACP Image Awards for Best Actress 41.
She joins the cast of the second installment of the adventures of Kingsman, titled Kingsman: The Golden Circle, under the direction of British director Matthew Vaughn. This blockbuster allows him to evolve alongside other Oscar winners ( Julianne Moore, Jeff Bridges, and Colin Firth ). and also signs the reunion between the actress and FOX. His role should be retained for the next installments of the franchise. This film allows him to find the heights of the box office, he won first place on its release and garnered nearly 400 million dollars worldwide at the end of exploitation.
Building on the surprise success of her first film Mustang (awarded at the Cannes Film Festival and the Césars, then selected for the Golden Globes and Oscars ), the Franco-Turkish director Deniz Gamze Ergüven hires Halle Berry for her second feature Kings, the actress embodies the female lead alongside Daniel Craig, filming begins at the end of December and the film chronicles the life of a family in a Los Angeles neighborhood, a few weeks before the riots that engulfed the city in 1992, following the verdict in the Rodney King case.
In 2018, Halle Berry received a Matrix Awards, in New York, a prize that rewards her entire career, awarded by the association Women in Communication, as Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres, or Michelle Pfeiffer once received. That same year, the production company Lionsgate hires the actress to play an important role in the third installment of the adventures of John Wick worn by Keanu Reeves. She plays Sofia, a former acquaintance of John Wick with whom the hero will take refuge. Released in 2019, this film for which the actress had to undergo the most intensive training of her career as well as learning how to handle firearms(even breaking three ribs during filming), becomes in just 10 days, the biggest success of the series of films John Wick, in addition to a positive critical reception. For her role, she earned a Best Actress in an Action Movie nomination at the popular People's Choice Awards.
Finally, she made her debut as a director for the feature film Meurtrie ( Bruised ), in which she held the title role but also the role of producer. This martial arts drama recounts the return of a disgraced star to the ring who must, at the same time, combine with the reunion of his son. For this project, she is assisted by the production and choreography teams of John Wick Parabellum.
In parallel, she continued her work behind the camera by joining the production of the television sequel to the comedy Boomerang, in which she starred alongside Eddie Murphy in 1992. For this television adaptation, she works with the first African-American to receive the Emmy Award for Outstanding Screenplay for a Comedy Series, Lena Waithe. Halle Berry was initially against this project, first presented as a remake, before being convinced by Lena Waithe herself when it was finally decided to make it a spin-off of the film 60. The actress then changed her mind and joined the production with the possibility of seeing her character, Angela Lewis, make a few appearances in this romantic fiction broadcast by the BET 61 network.
In 2020, she joined the cast of Moonfall by Roland Emmerich alongside Josh Gad, a sci-fi epic produced by Lionsgate, in which she played a NASA astronaut. The same year, after two years of work, she presented Meurtrie ( Bruised ), her first feature film as a director at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.
Privacy
Born to an African-American father and a white mother, mixed-race Halle Berry says her bi-ethnic background was "painful and confusing" when she was young. She makes the decision early on to identify as a black woman because she knows that's going to be how people see her.
Halle Berry almost lost the use of her right ear following the repeated violence she suffered in the early 1990s (often attributed to Wesley Snipes, whom she was dating then).
She marries David Justice, a 65 -year-old baseball player. Following their separation in February, Halle Berry publicly states that she was so depressed that she contemplated suicide. Halle Berry and David Justice officially divorce on June.
From 2001 to 2005, Berry was married to singer-songwriter and performer Eric Benét, who underwent treatment for sex addiction in 2002. From 2005 to 2010, the actress dated Montreal model Gabriel Aubry with whom she had a daughter named Nahla, born March.
In 2012, she attended the French actor Olivier Martinez whom she married on July 13, 2013, and with whom she has a son named Maceo, born on October. Halle Berry and Olivier Martinez announced their divorce in October. A year later, the procedure is suspended. Indeed, the couple tries a reconciliation but the divorce becomes official in December.
Regarding the media exposure, reputed to be one of the most discreet stars in Hollywood, Halle Berry spoke on her Instagram account to respond to a user who asked her why she hid her children's faces on social networks :
“Let me be clear: I am not at all ashamed of my children. I try to find creative ways to incorporate them into my page as they are the biggest part of my life, but I also work very hard to keep their identities as private as possible as they are just children. I believe, and I am not criticizing those who have a different opinion, that it is my job as a mother to protect their privacy as best I can. When they are big and old and want to share their image on the internet, it will be up to them to make that choice, not me. Do you understand me? Have a nice day.
Regarding plastic surgery, Halle talks about the pressure that actresses are under in Hollywood and does not hesitate to compare it to drugs:
“The pressure is there. When you see everyone around you doing it, there are times when you think: to stay in the business, do I have to do the same thing? I'm not going to lie to you and tell you that never crossed my mind. But aging is natural and it happens to everyone. »
She says, during her interview with Yahoo Beauty, prefers to age without resorting to these practices. The Revlon ambassador who wants to “always look like she is, even if it's an older version” thinks that “too much surgery ends up changing you”.
The actress spoke publicly in 2017 about the lack of diversity and opportunity in Hollywood for African Americans. The first actress of color to win the Academy Award for Best Actress 8, becoming a symbol for the community and one of the most beautiful moments in the history of the ceremony, she believed that her victory would further open the doors to ethnic disparities. Despite some progress observed since her victory, she regrets the weak representation of minorities on screen.
“Black people of color only have a chance to play roles depending on how many films they are likely to be included in. We need screenwriters, directors, or producers of color, not just stars. We need to write, and start telling stories that include us.
In , the actress formalizes her relationship with the English rapper and producer Alexander Grant, an artist sixteen years her junior, mainly known by the stage name of Alex da Kid. In early December, the actress finally made the decision to put an end to this relationship. Since August 2020, Halle Berry has appeared in a relationship with singer Van Hunt.
Philanthropy
Halle Berry is no new to philanthropy. The actress supports many causes: for more than 15 years, she has been an ambassador for the Jenesse Center, an association for the fight against domestic violence, based in Los Angeles. The actress renewed her commitment alongside the designer Michael Kors and the world food program to fight against world hunger (WFP), by participating in numerous advertising campaigns, accompanying the association on the ground, to visit schools, and farms.
In 2009, she received the Love Our Children USA organization's “Mothers Who Make a Difference” award and was named a spokesperson for the Diabetes Children's Foundation.
Halle Berry is also a spokesperson for the pharmaceutical firm Novo Disk, which manufactures products for diabetics, and regularly participates in conferences to raise public awareness of this disease.
She is also very involved in the fight against cancer. Ambassador of the Revlon cosmetics brand since 1995, she notably participates in the annual Women's Marches for Breast Cancer Research in Los Angeles.
In, Berry testified alongside Jennifer Garner before the California State Assembly Judiciary Committee to defend a bill that would protect the children of celebrities from paparazzi harassment. The bill was adopted in September of that same year.
For the 2016 edition of the campaign to raise funds for the Saks Fifth Avenue chain of stores, Halle Berry becomes the official ambassador alongside designer Christian Louboutin.
