Samia Hassan Suluhu  is a Tanzanian politician and economist On March 19, 2021, she became president of Tanzania after the unexpected death of her predecessor, John Magufuli, becoming the first female head of state in the country's history.

In 2015, after the general elections in which she was in tandem with the candidate for president Magufuli, she became the first female vice president of Tanzania. He previously served as deputy of the constituency of Makunduchi from 2010 to 2015 by the Party of the Revolution and took over as Minister of State in the Office of the Vice President of Affairs of the Union since 2010. He was minister in the semi-autonomous region of Zanzibar . In 2014 he assumed the vice-presidency of the Constituent Assembly in charge of drafting the new constitution of the country.

Biography of  Samia Suluhu

Suluhu was born in the Sultanate of Zanzibar . He studied primary school in different schools, including Chwaka Primary School in Unguja from 1966 to 1968, Ziwani Primary School in Pemba from 1970 to 1971, and Mahinda Primary School in Unguja in 1972, according to the details of his biography on the website of the vice presidency. From 1973 to 1975, Samia joined Ngambo and Lumumba High School in Unguja. 

After completing secondary education in 1977, he joined the Zanzibar Institute of Financial Management (ZIFA) to study Statistics.

She was an employee of the Ministry of Planning and Development. In 1986 he joined the Institute of Development Management (now Mzumbe University) where he did advanced studies in public administration . 

After studying in Tanzania, he studied at the National Institute of Public Administration in Lahore, Pakistan. In 1991 he joined the Leadership Management Institute, Hyderabad in India taking a certificate management course. 

In 1992, she was employed in a project funded by the World Food Program (WFP). The next step was to work on a project funded by the World Food Program . Between 1992 and 1994, he studied at the University of Manchester graduating with a postgraduate diploma in economics. In 2015, she earned a Master's degree in Community Economic Development through a joint program between the Open University of Tanzania and Southern New Hampshire University.

Political career of  Samia Suluhu

In 2000 he began his political career. She was elected as a special member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives and appointed Minister of Youth Employment, Women and Childhood Development in Zanzibar with President Amani Karume a post that she held from 2000 to 2005. She was the only high-ranking minister in the cabinet and suffered discrimination and sexism for being a woman explains her biography. 

She was re-elected in 2005 as Minister of Tourism, Trade and Investment in Zanzibar. 

In 2010, she ran for the National Assembly elections, as a candidate for the Makunduchi electoral district, achieving victory with more than 80% of the vote. In 2014, then-President Jakaya Kikwete appointed her Minister of State for Trade Union Affairs and that same year she was elected Vice President of the Constituent Assembly in charge of drafting the country's new constitution. 

In July 2015, she was chosen by presidential candidate John Magufuli as his running mate in the general elections ,  being the first woman to hold that position in the history of the Party of the Revolution .She subsequently became the first female vice president in the country's history after Magufuli's victory in the elections. She was also the region's first vice president after Specioza Kazibwe assumed the vice presidency of Uganda from 1994 to 2003.

During her five years as Vice President, she represented Tanzania at most international meetings at the United Nations, the African Union, SADC and in the East African community. The last time Magufuli was seen alive was at the East African Heads of State summit where he appeared to greet and later it was Suluhu who took over the meeting.

John Magufuli revalidated the presidency in the general elections of October 2020 . After her sudden death at the beginning of the second term, the constitution establishes that the vice president must assume the presidency for the rest of the term that lasts until the end of 2025. Suluhu thus becomes the first woman president of Tanzania. 

Personal life of  Samia Suluhu

In 1978, she married Hafidh Ameir, now a retired agricultural officer and working as a consultant. They have a daughter and three sons. His daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir , born in 1982, is the only one who has followed in his footsteps in politics and is a member of the Zanzibar House of Representatives.
