Childhood

Lata Mangeshkar was born in Indore, Madhya Pradesh (Central India Agency in British times).  His nickname is Hridaya. His father Pandit Dinanath Mangeshkar was a classical singer and playwright.  Lata is the eldest child of her parents. His younger siblings are Asha, Usha, Meena, and Hridaynath.

Lata got her first music lessons from her father. At the age of five, he started working as a child artist in his father's musicals. He captivated the world with his supernatural voices in the field of music. His voice made many songs immortal. His childhood was spent in Sangli. Lata didi was born in the house of playwright, singer, and musician Dinanath Mangeshkar.

The Mangeshkar family is originally from Goa. His original last name was Navathe. Dinanath Mangeshkar at SangliHe received the degree of Master. Lata didi used to go to Government School No. 11 near Dandekar Mall at present Maruti Chowk in Sangli with her younger siblings. One day little Asha started crying. Then one of the teachers got very angry with little Lata. Since then, Latadidi has stopped going to school. Then a teacher would come home and teach them.

Shortly afterward, the Mangeshkar family left Sangli. Lata Mangeshkar had great faith in Ganapati in the garden on Haripur Road. So when she was going to Kolhapur, she always wanted to see this Ganapati.

A career in Filmmaking

In 1942, when Lata was just 13 years old, her father died of a heart attack. Then a relative of Mangeshkar and the owner of Navayug Film Company - Master Vinayak took care of Lata's family. He started his career as a singer and actress in Latabai.

Lata sang Nachu Ya Gade, Khelu Sari Mani Haus Bhari, a song composed by Sadashivrao Newrekar for Vasant Joglekar 's Kiti Hansal (1942), a Marathi film, but this song was omitted from the film. Master Vinayak gave Latabai a small role in the first Marathi film of the new age, Mangala Gaur (1942).

In this film, he sang Natali Chaitra's Navalai, a song composed by Dada Chandekar. When Master Vinayak's company office was shifted to Mumbai in 1945, Latabai came to Mumbai. She started learning Hindustani classical music from Ustad Amanat Ali Khan (Bhendi Bazarwale). He directed Vasant Joglekar 's Hindi film Aapki Sevame (1946)Pa Lagun Kar Jori was sung ( Datta Davjekar was the composer of that song). Lata and Asha (sister) played small roles with Master Jahan in Master Vinayak's first Hindi film ( Buddy Maa - 1945).

In that film, Lata sang this hymn in Mata Tere Charano. During the recording of Master Vinayak's second Hindi film ( Subhadra - 1946), Latabai met composer Vasant Desai.

After the partition of India in 1947, when Ustad Amanat Ali Khan Bhendi Bazarwale emigrated to the newly formed Pakistan, Latadidi Amanat Khan (Devaswale) started learning classical music. Latabai received this training from Pandit Tulsidas Sharma, a disciple of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan.

After the death of Master Vinayak in 1948, musician Ghulam Haider directed Latabai. Singers with nasal and heavy voices like Noor Jahan, Shamshad Begum, and Joharabai (Ambalewali) were very popular in Hindi films at that time.

Ghulam Haider introduced Lataji to producer Shashidhar Mukherjee, who was working on the Hindi film Shaheed (1948), but Mukherjee dismissed Lata's voice as "very subtle". Then Haider gets a little angry answer - in the future, producers and directors will hold Lata's feet and beg for songs for their films. Haider gave Latadidi a great opportunity to sing Dil Mera Toda in the film Majboor (1948).

Initially, Lata imitated the then-popular Noor Jahan in her songs, but later Lata developed her own style of singing. At that time, the lyricists of songs in Hindi films were mainly Muslim poets, so there were a lot of Urdu words in the lyrics of the songs. Once the well-known actor Dilip Kumar made derogatory remarks about Lata's " Marathi " pronunciation in Hindi / Hindustani songs, then Lata took lessons in Urdu pronunciation from a cleric named Shafi.

The song Aayega Aanewala from the popular film Mahal (1949) marked a turning point in Lata's career. (The composer of the song was Khemchand Prakash, while the song was sung by actress Madhubala in the film .)
