J. R. D. Tata

Jehangir Ratanji Dadabhoy Tata (29 July 1904 – 29 November 1993) was an Indian aviator, industrialist, entrepreneur, and chairman of Tata Group. Born into the Tata family, Jahangir was the son of the famous businessman Ratanji Dadabhai Tata and Suzanne "Sunny" Brier. Her mother was the first woman to drive a car in India.

In 1929, he became India's first licensed pilot. He is best known for establishing various ventures under the Tata Group such as Tata Consultancy Services, Tata Motors, Titan Industries, Tata Salt, Voltas, and Air India.

For his contribution, the French government awarded him the Legion of Honor, France's highest civilian honor, in 1973. The Government of India awarded the Padma Bhushan, the country's second-highest civilian honor, in 1955 and the Bharat Ratna, the country's highest civilian honor, in 1992 in recognition of its pioneering contribution to the world of Indian entrepreneurship.

Personal life

In 1925, he joined Tata & Sons as an unpaid trainee. 

In 1936, he was elected President of Tata & Sons, India's largest industrial conglomerate. For decades he directed the giant Tata group of companies working in the fields of steel, engineering, energy, chemicals, and hospitality. He was very well known for his business success and high ethical standards.

JRD Tata was a pioneer in the aircraft industry and other industries. 

On 10 February 1929, Tata obtained the first pilot license issued in India. 

In 1932, he founded India's first commercial airline, Tata Airlines, which later became the national airline of India, Air India, in the year 1932. He later came to be known as the father of Indian Civil Aviation.

Under his chairmanship, the assets of the Tata group increased from USD 1000 million to USD 5 billion. He started with 14 ventures under his leadership, which, by the time he left office on July 24, 1979, grew into a large group of 95 enterprises. 

In the year 1979, he joined Tata Computer Center (now Tata Consultancy Services ) 1979. Established Tata Steel.

He was a trustee of the Sir Dorabji Tata Trust, established in 1932, for more than 50 years. Under his guidance, the Trust established several institutions of national importance, such as the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS, 1936), Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR, 1945), and Asia's First Cancer Hospital, Tata Memorial Center, and the Performing Arts. National Center.

In 1975, he founded Tata Motors. JRD Tata launched Air India International in 1919 as India's first international airline. 

In 1953, the Government of India appointed him the chairman of Air India and the director of the board of Indian Airlines. He remained in this post for 25 years. JRD Tata adopted several policies for the benefit of its company's employees. 

In 1958, he started the 'Employees Association with Management' program to give a strong voice to the workers in the affairs of the company. He adopted schemes like eight hours of work per day, free medical aid, and workers' accident compensation.

Awards and honors

JRD Tata has been honored with several awards. He was awarded the honorary rank of Group Captain by the Indian Air Force and was later promoted to the rank of Air Commodore and then Air Vice Marshal on 1 April 1949. He has been awarded many international awards for aviation - the Tony Janus Award in March 1979, the Gold Air Medal by the Federation Aeronautic International in 1959, the Edward Warner Prize by the Canadian-based International Civil Aviation Organization in 1959, and the Daniel Guggenheim in 1949. Award. 

In 1955, he received the Padma Vibhushanhas award. For his selfless human endeavor, JRD Tata was awarded India's highest civilian honor, Bharat Ratna, in 1929.

Death

He died at the age of 79 in Geneva on 29 November 193 due to a kidney infection. 

On his death, the Indian Parliament was adjourned to his memory. He is buried in a cemetery called Paré Lechse in Paris.
