JRD was reluctant because of Nelco's historical financial performance, as it had never paid regular dividends before. Furthermore, when Ratan took over, Consumer Electronics Nelco had a market share of 2% and a loss of 60% of sales. Nevertheless, JRD followed Ratan's suggestion.

From 1972 to 1975, Nelco eventually increased its market share to 20% and also recovered its losses. But in 1975, Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India, declared a state of emergency, which led to the economic downturn.

After this union problems occurred in 1977, so the production could not improve even after the demand increased. Eventually, Tata faced a union strike, a lockout for seven months. Ratan always believed in Nelco's fundamental tenacity, but the venture could not be further.

In 1977, Ratan went to Empress Mills Sampa, a Tata-controlled textile mill. When he took over the company, it was one of the ailing units of the Tata group. Ratan took over and even announced a dividend. As Ratan's insistence was made, some investment was made, but it was not enough, as the competition for less labor-intensive enterprises made many companies such as Impress unviable, which had a high workforce and spent very little on modernization.

As the market for coarse and medium cotton fabrics was unfavorable (which was the total production of Empress), Empress suffered heavy losses. Bombay House, Tata Headquarters, was unwilling to divert funds from other group companies to ventures that need long-term care. Therefore, some Tata directors, mainly Nani Palkiwala Decided that Tata should abolish the mill, which was finally closed in 1986.

Ratan was deeply disappointed by this decision and later in an interview with Hindustan Times claimed that Empress needed only Rs 50 lakh to continue the mill.

In the year 1981, Ratan was made the chairman of Tata Industries and other holding companies of the group, where he was responsible for transforming the group's strategic idea group and promoter of new ventures into high technology businesses.

In 1991, he took over the charge of Group Chair Main from JRD. The Tatas removed the old guards and the young managers were given responsibilities. Since then, they have changed the shape of the Tata group, which today holds more market capital than any other business venture in the Indian stock market.

Under Ratan's guidance, Tata Consultancy Services became a public corporation and Tata Motors was listed on the New York Stock Exchange. In 1998, Tata Motors launched their conceptualized Tata Indica.

On 31 January 2007, under the chairmanship of Ratan Tata, Tata Sons successfully acquired the Corus Group, an Anglo-Dutch aluminum and steel manufacturer. With this acquisition, Ratan Tata became a prominent figure in the Indian business world. As a result of this merger, the world got the fifth-largest steel-producing institution.

Ratan Tata's inspirational thoughts

Ratan Tata, who has been the President of Tata for more than 20 years, is known as a living legend in the Indian business world.

If you want to move on quickly, go it alone. But if you want to go far, take everyone with you.

Every person has some qualities and talents. Therefore, every person should recognize our qualities and talents in us.

I admire the people who have succeeded. But if that success was achieved very ruthlessly, I would praise but not respect those people.

To be great is to do small things that will make the country stronger. Like not wasting water, saving electricity, and taking as much food as you need. We will go to a superpower by making our country great in such a small way.
