Demetrius Jamel "Ja" Morant is an American
professional basketball player who plays in the National
Basketball Association for the Memphis Grizzlies team. Plays
as a point guard. At the student level, he played for the Murray State
University team " Murray State Racers ". He was
selected 2nd overall by the Memphis Grizzlies in the 2019 NBA Draft.
Biography
Early years
Middle school
Morant attended Crestwood School in
Sumter, South Carolina. During his first three years on the basketball
team, Morant grew from 175 cm to 183 cm. Morant graduated as the top
scorer in school history with 1,679 points, and also set a single-game points
record of 47 against Sumter School.
In his final two years of high school,
Jha averaged 27 points, 8 reboun, ds, and 8 assists per game. Also during his
time with the Crestwood team, Morant became a 3-time South Carolina State MVP.
College
career
College
Morant was not on ESPN, 247 Sports or
Rival recruiting
lists. The only invitation from a major NCAA Division I program
was from the University of South Carolina. He was accidentally
discovered by Murray State University's mid-level program in July 2016 when
assistant coach James Caine visited camp hoping to see the player join the Murray
State Racers. Looking for a bite to eat, Kane noticed that Morant was
playing 3x3 on the extra court. Impressed, he contacted Racers head coach
Matt McMahon, who soon offered Morant a scholarship.
On September 3, 2016, Morant pledged to
play for Murray State during a dinner at McMahon's house. Morant was also
invited by Ducane University, the University of Maryland Eastern
Shore, South Carolina State University, and Wofford College.
First course
On November 10, 2017, Morant made his
debut for the Murray State Racers with 7 points and 11 assists in a
118-61 win over the University of Brescia of the National Intercollegiate
Athletic Association (NAIA).
On December 12, he compiled his first
career double-double with 10 points, 12 rebounds, and 6 assists in a
69–55 loss to St. Loise.
On December 28, Jha collected his first
career triple-double., recording 11 points, 10 rebounds,s, and 14 assists in
an 80-52 win over Eastern Illinois. Morant recorded the second
triple-double in college history, the first collected by Isaac Miles in
1984. Jah also set the record for assists for the CFSB Center, home of the
Racers, previously held by Aubrey Reese with 12 assists against the Alabama
State Hornets in 1999.
On February 1, 2018, he set a season-high with 23 points against the Southeast Missouri State Redhawks. Averaged 12.7 points, 6.5
rebounds, and 6.3 assists per game, Morant was named to the Ohio Valley
Conference (OVC) team and OVC rookie team. He became the seventh freshman in 25 years to
record 150 assists, 150 rebounds and 10 blocks while shooting at
least 42 percent from the field.
Second course
As a sophomore, Morant took on a
leadership role with the Racers after the departure of key players.
In his season debut, he had 26 points and
11 assists in a 74–53 win over Wright State.
On November 24, 2018, Morant recorded 29
points, 13 rebounds, and 12 assists in a 77-66 win over Missouri State, becoming
the first Murray State player to ever collect multiple triple-doubles.
In his next game, he scored a season-high
38 points in a 78–72 loss to Alabama. By around
December 2018, Morant was almost unanimously drafted into the top five of the
2019 NBA draft, and in late January 2019, at least one portal predicted him as
the first pick.2019 NBA draft.
On January 10, 2019, Morant was one of 25
candidates for the John Wooden Prize, an award given to the top student of
the season.
On sometime, he broke the high school
record for assists in a single game with 18 and also scored 26 points against the
University of Tennessee at Martin.
On January 19, he set a new personal best
with 40 points, 11 assists, 5stealsl,s and 21/21 free throws in a win over SIS
Edwardsville. Morant broke the conference record for consecutive free
throws made and became the tenth player in Murray State history to score 40
points in a single ga. Morant also became the first NCAA Division I
player in 20 years to record at least 40 points, 10 assists and 5 steals in a
single game.
On February 2, Jah had 28 points and 7
assists in a 67–63 win over Tennessee Tech. He broke the school record for
assists in a season set by Chad Townsend in the 1996/97 season oby212 assists. After
25 points, 8 rebounds, and 14 assists against Eastern Kentucky, Morant became
Murray State's 46th player with 1,000 career college points and broke the OVC
record for single-season assists held by Dwayne Washington (Middle Tennessee)
held for 32 years.
At the end of the regular season, he was
named the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year and named to the
All-OVC Team, leading the NCAA Division I in assists. He was later
named to the First Team All-American by the US Basketball Writers Association
(USBWA) and Second Team by the American sports magazine Sporting News.
On March 8, in the semi-finals of the OVC
tournament against Jacksonville State, Morant scored 29 points, including the
game-winning two-pointer with a foul. One day later, Jha scored 36 points,
7 rebounds, and 3 assists in a 77-65 win over the Belmont Bruins, who were
playing without their main All-OVC All-OVC First Team center, the injured Nick
Muszynski, to take the Ohio Valley Conference title. 37]. Subsequently,
Morant was named MVP of the tournament.
On March 21, Morant had 17 points, 11
rebounds and 16 assists to help his team beat Marquette 83–64 in the first
round of the 2019 NCAA Tournament. He became the eighth player to
officially record a triple-double in tournament history. He scored 28
points in the second round in a 90–62 loss to Florida State. During the
game, Morant set school records for career assists and points in a
season. He ended his sophomore campaign averaging 24.5 points, 5.7
rebounds, 10 assists, and 1.8 steals per game. Morant became the first NCAA
player to average at least 20 points and 10 assists per game during a season.
Professional
career
Memphis Grizzlies (2019–present)
Season 2019/20
Morant was selected with the second
overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft by the Memphis Grizzlies.
On July 2, 2019, Morant signed a
two-year, $17.9 million contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
On October 23, 2019, Morant played his
first NBA game against the Miami Heat (101-120), scoring 14 points, 4
rebounds and 4 assists, as well as one steal and one block each.
On February 9, 2020, Morant recorded his
first triple-double of his NBA career against the Washington
Wizards to lead his team to a 106-99 win.
In season 2019/20Morant led the NBA
among rookies in assists per game (7.1) and points scored (1138, 17.8 per
game). Morant was named NBA Rookie of the Year on
September 4, 2020, defeating Kendrick Nunn ( Miami Heat )
and Zion Williamson ( New Orleans Pelicans ).
Season 2020/21
On December 23, 2020, Morant scored a
career-high 44 points along with nine assists, two rebounds,s and two steals
against the San Antonio Spurs (119:131).
On May 21, 2021, in a play-in game
against the Golden State Warriors (117:112 OT), Morant recorded 35
points, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists to secure his team's first playoff spot in
four seasons. Two days later, Morant made his playoff debut with
26 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists to help the Grizzlies win the series opener
against the Utah Jazz (112-109). In-Game 2 of the series,
Morant had 47 points and 7 assists, but Memphis lost 129-141. The
Grizzlies lost in a five-game series and were eliminated from the playoffs.
Season 2021/22
On October 20, 2021, in the season
opener, Morant had 37 points and six assists in a 132-121 win against the Cleveland
Cavaliers. On October 24, he had 40 points and 10 assists in a
118-121 game against the Los Angeles Lakers. On December 29,
Morant scored a season-high 41 points and hit a career-high six three-pointers
in a 104-99 win against the Lakers. On January 4, 2022, Morant had
36 points, 8 assists, and 6 rebounds in a 118-104 win against the Brooklyn
Nets. On January 21, 2022, Morant had 38 points, 6 rebounds, 6
assists, and 2 steals against the Denver Nuggets (122-118).
On January 26, 2022, Morant tied his
season-high in points (41) and also had 8 assists, 5 rebounds, and 2 steals
against the San Antonio Spurs (118:110). On January 27,
2022, Morant was selected to his first NBA All-Star Game and earned a spot in
the Western Conference starting five. The following day, he recorded
his fourth career triple-double with 30 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists in a
119-109 win against the Utah Jazz.
Personal
Life
Morant has a younger sister, Tenia, who grew up playing
backyard basketball with him and now plays for Hillcrest High School in Dalzell. Morant's
left arm is tattooed with the phrase: "beneath no one" - advice given
to him by his mother. Morant's favorite artist is rapper Lil Baby. Morant's
athleticism is often compared to point guard Russell Westbrook, whom
Morant says is his favorite player.
