Equipment
Oliver Taylor Hawkins ( Fort
Worth, Texas, February
17, 1972 - Bogotá, Colombia, March 25, 2022 ) was an
American musician known for being the drummer for the rock
band Foo Fighters. Before joining the band in 1997, he was the
touring drummer for Sass Jordan, and Alanis Morissette, as well as
the drummer for experimental progressive band Sylvia. In 2004, Hawkins
formed his own side project, Taylor Hawkins, and the Coattail Riders., in
which he played drums, and sang. He was voted 'Best Rock Drummer' in 2005
by the UK percussion magazine Rhythm.
Biography
Taylor Hawkins was born in Forth Worth, Texas on February 17,
1972. Her family moved to Laguna Beach, California, in 1976. She had
two siblings, Jason, and Heather.
He attended Thurston Jr. High School, and later went to Laguna
Beach High School.
He began musical studies when he was just a child. Taylor
started, and finished his conservatory career, in classical percussion. Likewise,
he was able to play other instruments such as the guitar, and
the piano, which gave him a great musicality. Ever since he started
playing drums he always cited Stewart Copeland of The Police,,
and Roger Taylor of Queen as his main influences. His
favorite bands were The Police, Queen, Jane's Addiction, Led
Zeppelin, Guns N' Roses, and Pink Floyd.
Taylor started at a very young age in bands in his city, but the
first one with important record references is from one called Sylvia, in which
he composed, and played drums with some friends. Offers would soon come to
him as he stood out for his quality and technique, so he left this band to
join the Sass Jordan touring band, which raised his reputation until he ended
up playing with Alanis Morissette with the band Sexual
Chocolate. He accompanied the singer on her Jagged Little Pill album
tour.
In 1997 he joined the band Foo Fighters. In the mid-2000s he
formed his own group called Taylor Hawkins, and the Coattail
Riders in which he sang, and played drums.
In 2005 he was voted Best Rock Drummer by the British drum magazine
Rhythm.
Foo
Fighters
After touring through the spring of 1996, the group entered the
studio in Seattle with producer Gil Norton to record their second
album. A conflict arose between Dave Grohl, and then-drummer William
Goldsmith, which eventually caused the latter's departure. The band then
regrouped in Los Angeles and re-recorded virtually the entire album with
Grohl on drums. This album, The Color, and the Shape were released on March 20, 1997.
In search of a new drummer, Grohl contacted Taylor Hawkins (who
did these live duties for Alanis Morissette).) to ask if he could
recommend someone. Grohl was surprised that Hawkins himself volunteered,,
and so he made his Foo debut just in time for the album's release. He
remained the group's drummer from then until his death.
In addition to playing drums with the Foo Fighters, he co-wrote and sang on the double album In Your Honor. She occasionally
helped with backing vocals for songs at live performances, and occasionally
traded places with Dave to sing while he picked up drums.
Hawkins sang the songs "Cold Day in the Sun" (from the
acoustic side of In Your Honor ), "Have a Cigar"
(B-side of "Learn to Fly"), and "Life of Illusion" (B-side
of "Times Like These"). In addition, he provided backing vocals
on the tracks: Erase / Replace, Cheer Up, Boys (Your Make Up Is Running), and
But, Honestly (from the album Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace ). Live,
the number of songs in which he performed choirs was greater. She was also
the lead vocal on "Sunday Rain" from the album Concrete, and
Gold, a song for which Paul McCartney replaced on drums.
The
Coattail Riders
To occupy himself during his free time before the recording of One
by One, Taylor self-recorded some songs at a friend's studio. The result
would be released years later as Taylor Hawkins, and the Coattail Riders, a
group he formed with Chris Channey, and Gangnam. They released
their self-titled debut album in early 2006.
In 2010 they released their second work "Red Light
Fever", an album recorded at Studio 606. It was a production where Taylor
reflected his musical influences, in addition to the fact that Roger Taylor and Brian May from Queen participated in the recording,, and his friend, and partner
in the band Dave Grohl.
Other
projects
In 2007 he recorded drums on the album Volume II: The World
Of No Tomorrow by the band Coheed, and Cambria.
In 2010 he participated in Slash's solo album performing the
choirs in the song "Crucify The Dead", whose main voice was Ozzy
Osbourne.
During the Foo Fighters' vacation, Hawkins formed a band called
Chevy Metal, which played covers of rock bands from the '70s, and '80s,
primarily ZZ Top, Aerosmith, Deep Purple, Van Halen, Queen,, and Black
Sabbath. In this project, he had participation from his bandmates Chris
Shiflett, and Dave Grohl.
In 2011 Taylor played drums for Vasco Rossi songs. In June
2012, he was confirmed to audition for the CBGB movie where he played the role
of Iggy Pop.
Trivia
Hawkins and Dave Grohl occasionally played
so-called drum duels at live shows, i.e. parallel drums, or
swapped places, and Hawkins took over vocals and guitar. After the There
Is Nothing Left to Lose tour, Hawkins sought medical treatment for
addiction problems. In 2003, Hawkins guest-starred on
the Campfire Girls album Tells Them Hi ( Interscope ),
alongside Dave Sardy, Scott Weiland, and Chris Goss. Featuring
former Jane's Addiction bassist Eric Avery Hawkins
also worked together. On the side, Hawkins played old Black
Sabbath and The Who songs with friends in a cover band called Chevy
Metal.
Death
On March 25, 2022, he died at the age of fifty. The cause is
not yet confirmed. According to reports, he was found unconscious in his
hotel room in Bogotá, Colombia. The band was touring South
America at the time of the announcement and was scheduled to perform at
the Festival Estéreo Picnic in Bogotá that night.
