Howard achieved further public recognition with his roles in Spider-Man 3 (2007), Terminator Salvation (2009), The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), The Help (2011), Jurassic World (2015), and Jurassic World. : the fallen kingdom (2018)
Biography
Conceived in Dallas, Texas, the source of her middle name, she was born in Los Angeles, California, the daughter of writer Cheryl Alley and actor/director Ron Howard, on March 2, 1981. Her paternal grandparents are actors Rance Howard. and the late Jean Speegle Howard, her uncle is actor Clint Howard and her godfather is actor Henry Winkler, who co-starred in Happy Days with his father.
Bryce and her younger sisters, twins Jocelyn Carlyle Howard and Paige Carlyle Howard (born 1985), and her younger brother Reed Cruz Howard (born 1987), are named after the places where they were conceived. Both Bryce and her siblings were raised away from show business. Their parents did not allow them to access television, encouraging them to enjoy sports activities and outdoor games.
At the age of 7, however, he was allowed to be an extra in his father's movie.
In an appearance on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Howard mentioned that she and her siblings
were cared for by family friend Tom Cruise on several
occasions. She grew up in Westchester, New York.) and on a farm in Greenwich ( Connecticut ).
Studies
He attended Stagedoor Manor, a performing arts camp in upstate New York, with actress Natalie Portman. After graduating from high school, he studied at New York University (NYU) Tisch School of the Arts for three years, during which time he also attended the Stella Adler Conservatory, The Experimental Wing, and the International Theater Wing in Amsterdam.
During her studies, she participated in the concept recording of the Broadway musical A Tale of Two Cities. She graduated from it with her Bachelor of Dramatic Arts in 2003. Bryce is also an alumna of the Steppenwolf Theater Company in Chicago and the Actors Center in New York.
During his stay in New York, Howard was a core member of the New York Theater Workshop's resident Mitu Theater Company, which is known for its exploration of theatrical forms. When she enrolled in drama schools, she stopped using her last name to avoid special treatment due to her father. She later changed her mind because her combined first and middle names made her sound like a porn star.
Career
1989-2006
Howard made his acting debut as a disgraced extra in the 1989 comedy-drama Parenthood. He was also an extra in the critically acclaimed father-directed film Apollo 13 ( 1995 ) and in the Universal Studios production of the stolen Christmas, The Grinch (2000).
In the years that followed, Bryce appeared in numerous plays in New York. Among them is "House and Garden" ( 2002 ), and Alan Ayckbourn's production staged at the Manhattan Theater Club, in which he played a disdainful and flirtatious teenager. While she performed the role of Rosalinda.
In the acclaimed production of William Shakespeare's comedy As You Like It (2003), Howard caught the eye of director M. Night
Shyamalan. She then starred in the drama Book of Love (2004)
directed by Alan Brown, playing a young woman who has an affair with a lonely
teenager, destroying her marriage. It was generally ignored by critics and
moviegoers alike.
His first major role was in Shyamalan's fantasy thriller The Village (2004). When Kirsten Dunst was unable to commit to the show, Howard was cast without having to audition, two weeks after Shyamalan first saw her on stage. Her story is about a town living by the ways of the 19th century, whose inhabitants live in fear of the creatures that dwell in the forests beyond the town.
Bryce plays the female lead, the boss's blind daughter, and Joaquin Phoenix's love interest. Her performance was applauded by critics and she garnered several nominations for various awards, most notably in the "Best Breakthrough Performance" category. She had good marketing but public interest was mixed.
After that, Howard was cast by Lars Von Trier to replace Nicole Kidman as Grace
Mulligan in Manderlay (2005), the sequel to Dogville (2003). Set on a plantation, the director said it's
"pretty clear" that her film can be seen as an allusion to
President George W. Bush's efforts to impose democracy in
Iraq. Manderlay was a box office flop.
Howard reunited with Shyamalan in Lady in the Water (2006), in which she stars as Story, a type of nymph called a nerve. The fantasy film also stars Paul Giamatti. This Shyamalan project follows the story of Giamatti's character who rescues what he thinks is a young woman (Howard) from his swimming pool.
Once he discovers that she is actually a character from a
bedtime story that she is trying to get back home, he teams up with her tenants
to protect her from the creatures that try to keep her in her world. It
did poorly at the box office and received a lot of critical acclaim. When
asked about what message he hoped viewers would get from the film, Howard said,
"I would say it's very simple. It's that if you have faith in everything
that's meant to be, it will happen. "
Howard then returned to play Rosalinda in Kenneth Branagh 's version of Shakespeare 's play, As You Like It (2006). The film was released theatrically in Europe before going direct to cable in the United States, premiering on HBO. Bryce was nominated for a Golden Globe at the 2008 ceremony. The project received negative reviews from the British media, while American polls were more favorable.
USA Today writer Robert Bianco noted, "As Rosalinda, the
series' lead, Bryce Dallas Howard is a bit of a wild card, especially compared
to her more accurate co-stars like Alfred Molina,
David Oyelowo, and Blessed Brian. But she's very attractive, and sells the love
story." That same year, she wrote and directed a short film, Orchids,
as part of Glamor Reel Moments, a series financed
by Cartier and FilmAid International.
2007–present
In 2007, Howard starred in his first big hit, Spider-Man 3, a superhero movie, starring opposite Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst. Adapted from the Marvel Comics, and the last film Sam Raimi directed for the series, Bryce played Peter Parker's classmate Gwen Stacy., a fan favorite. She was intended for the role to remind fans that she was Peter's first love in the comics, however, she was left as "the other woman" in the film.
Bryce dyed her hair blonde, naturally red, for the role and performed many of her own stunts for her, unaware that she was several months pregnant. The film grossed a total of US $ 890 million, it is his most profitable film and the highest-grossing of the trilogy. After having played Gwen Stacy in Spider-Man 3, it had been confirmed that in a fourth superhero film, Howard would reprise his role. When the cancellation of the said film was announced, the thought could not be realized.
The science fiction film, Terminator Salvation(2009) was his next project. She was confirmed for the role in June 2008, replacing Charlotte Gainsbourg as Kate Connor. Set in 2018, the film follows a group of survivors led by John Connor as they fight to stop machines from destroying all of humanity. A total of US$370 million was raised, but it was not well received.
One reviewer called it "A chaotic, deafening,
intelligence-insulting disastrous, a crushing failure on almost every count." Bryce
played the title character in The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond (2009). Based on a 1957 screenplay by Tennessee Williams, which was not performed in many theaters.
A great point in her career was the interpretation of the role of Victoria, a vampire seeking revenge, in the third installment of the Twilight saga, The Twilight Saga: Eclipse (2010), a romantic vampire film from Summit Entertainment based on the Stephenie Meyer books. She landed the role after Rachelle Lefevre was pulled from the shoot due to a scheduling conflict in July 2009.
The film was directed by David Slade and principal photography began in August 2009. Theatrical release on June 302010 set a new record for the largest midnight opening in the country in box office history, grossing around US$30 million from over 4,000 theaters and topping the weekend box office.
In total, Eclipse grossed nearly US$700
million. Media reviews were polarized, but critics liked Bryce's portrayal
of the role.
In December 2009, she was cast in Clint Eastwood's film Beyond Life (2010) playing the role of Melanie who
had a growing love interest in Matt Damon's character. When Howard first read the
script she became interested in it, having been drawn to the central character
( Matt Damon ) - a lonely man with the ability to talk to the
deceased person. She said of it, "It's personal to me because a lot
of my family members actually have that ability. It's like a gift."
In early January 2011, she became the first celebrity ambassador for designer Kate Spade's bag. Her first film of 2011 was The Help, the film adaptation of Kathryn Stockett's 2009 best-selling novel of the same name, in which she starred alongside Emma Stone, Viola Davis, Octavia Spencer, and Jessica Chastain.
The film focused on the African-American employees of wealthy white civil servants in Mississippi before the civil rights era. Howard teamed up with her father to help produce the Gus Van Sant -directed film Restless., about the dark coming of age of a boy and a girl who are engrossed with death. Bryce had a supporting role opposite Seth Rogen in the cancer comedy-drama 50/50, based on a true story.
He stated about this film:
"It's showing the experience through a very truthful lens of
humor." Both movies were released in September 2011. That year he
announced that he would be directing a movie called The Originals. Howard
co-wrote the script with his brother-in-law Dane Charbonneau and described it
as " my generation's Breakfast Club ". This would mark her directorial debut.
Howard directed the short When You Find Me, a social film being developed through a collaboration with Canon. The film was developed under the premise of gathering
inspiration through images selected from a photography contest. More than
96,000 entries were accepted, while only eight final images were selected to be
used for the production of the film.
On September 27, 2013, she presented herself as a candidate to star in the movie Jurassic World, being officially hired at the beginning of November.
Personal Life
She became a vegetarian when Joaquin Phoenix, her partner in The Village, showed her a
documentary about cruelty to animals. However, in August 2006, Howard said
that she had changed her vegetarian diet in order to help increase her amino
acid levels in preparation for her pregnancy. Due to a rare medical
condition that she developed after her pregnancy, she now eats meat. She is
also considered a bit superstitious.
During her senior year of high school, Bryce fell in love
with existentialism. "I was like, 'That's it! This is my
religion.'" I had never felt a connection to any kind of spirituality,
before that it was very basic. - You are responsible for the options you
choose -. But it was mind-blowing at the time."
Her hobby is writing and she is good friends with Kirsten
Dunst, Natalie Portman, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Chris Pratt.
Howard has said that he was "freaked out" by "the
Hollywood scene" and has never had a sip of alcohol in his entire
life. He credits that he made this decision due to the negative effects of
alcoholism on his family. Bryce recalls, "When I was in high school,
I never went to parties because I was embarrassed to say no. So I hardly had
any social groups."
Marriage and family
Bryce Howard has been married to actor Seth Gabel since June 17, 2006, with whom she now lives in Hollywood, California. They met at New York University and dated for five years. Bryce had only had one previous boyfriend and she claims to have vigorously pursued Gabel after meeting him.
The couple had planned to start a family together in their 30s. However, seven days after their wedding, she found out that she was expecting her first child. She gave birth to her son, Theodore Norman Howard-Gabel, nicknamed Theo.
On February 17, 2007. Theo's godfather is actor Josh Gad. Howard later admitted that she suffered from postpartum depression. She had difficulty breastfeeding, which turned out to be more painful than experiencing natural childbirth and often cried in the shower.
Instead of referring to her son by her name, she called him "it". With the combination of drug treatments and sessions with a doctor and a therapist, she overcame depression, which lasted for about 18 months. Bryce spoke about the depression in the year 2010.
That you wish you had never suffered from postpartum depression? Of course. But to deny the experience is to deny what I am. I still mourn the loss of what could have been, but I also feel deep gratitude for those who were there for me, for the lesson that we shouldn't be afraid to ask for help, and for the feeling of summer that still remains.
Bryce gave birth to the couple's second child, this time a girl, named Beatrice Jean Howard-Gabel, on January 19, 2012.
